<p>Yes. The idea of first removing vowels, etc comes (I believe)
from Squeak's old days. I think it is useful for (for instance)
Browser buttons. Open a Browser, make it smaller, and see what
happens. The "cat porridge" is perhaps still useful.</p>
<p>But may be it should not be used for window title. Opinions?</p>

seems that what we are doing is actually atypical. Most GUIs
seem to handle this by 1) just clipping/truncating the title,
or 2) replacing part of the text with ellipsis (…), either at
the start, middle (common for paths), or end. Also, they use
tooltip/hover text to show the full title, just as you
suggested (but not when the text fits, only when it was
shortened).</div>
