I think that the Preference is already over engineered and can be 
simplified.

Take a look at MetaProperties in 
Cuis-Smalltalk-UI/tools/Morphic-MetaProperties.pck.st

MetaProperties may have complex tests but are simpler than Preferences.

hard to see to prototype].
