Hi Robert,
Welcome to the Cuis community. I'm Juan and I'm who started Cuis and am the BDFL. I'm on vacations right now and without a laptop, so this is a general answer. I can give a more detailed answer and maybe do a video call to guide you a bit when back home.
In your messages you raised aeveral issues. Some of them may be bugs or inconsistencies in documentation. We ahould fix them. Cuis is evolving all the time and these things happen.
Others are mostly the consequence of you facing a new system and assume that it either behaves exactly as you expect or it is broken. There's a third option though, and it is that you need to get familiar with it. When I prepare an exploration and coding session with youngsters I do a good planning of what I want to do, and then rehearse a couple of times with a rubber duck. Even if I know the system well. I suggest you do the same.
Finally, the main focus of Cuis and of Smalltalk is not to be easy for newcomers. 'Easy' and 'Simple' are two completely different things. Please devote some time to read our documentation and to refresh those '50 year old concepts' that still guide us. We included several good links.
I'm sure that if you take it a bit slower and devote some time to have fun with the system, and to ask specific questions here, you'll enjoy Cuis a lot.
Cheers,
Juan Vuletich

i see that TextEditor has a method >>nullText which does not return nil so my very first worries about labels that are nil is not utterly crazy. Daft, maybe. but Crazy, maybe not. First symptom as i try to grasp this: TextEditor has no accessor to get its model. So i will try to grasp why a setter, but no getter. Is it an MVP pattern i am not seeing ? Are Squeak-style window handles not the thing to use in a demo of Cuis as a Smalltalk ? But what is Morphic if i cannot navigate from the Two available tool flap handles ? Argh. So i set aside TextEditor and move to Workspace or Browser. the former is often home to quicksand about contexts and compiledMethod etc There is no simple Browser in my experience ... so i tread with care. See why i want Text Editor as my demo ? Transcript i treat as off-limits. still befuddled, r
